This Masterclass is for all play therapists seeking to deepen their understanding of children’s play and the numerous themes that emerge in the play therapy process. We will explore how to identify play themes through multiple theoretical lenses, and case discussion will illustrate how to consider them in the context of case conceptualisation and parent feedback.
This Masterclass assumes knowledge of the Therapeutic Powers of Play and Erikson’s Social-Emotional Development Model, and offers additional ways to understand themes in play therapy.
This Masterclass is designed as a stand-alone training workshop.
Participants will benefit most if you have strong case conceptualisation skills, have already completed our Case Conceptualisation Masterclass, or are planning to purchase our Case Conceptualisation Masterclass.
Key Learning Objectives:
1) Deepen understanding of how themes in play therapy can be identified through a range of theoretical lenses including neurobiological/physiological, relational, self-concept, behavioural, symbolic, and needs-based assessment.
2) Increased therapist capacity to sit with the uncertainty of holding multiple possibilities of meaning of children’s play therapy process.
3) Sharpen clinical analysis skills in making sense of play therapy themes in the context of case conceptualisation and therapeutic goals.
4) Apply different theoretical lenses to common themes in play therapy and the multiple possibilities these themes may hold for a child – e.g. aggression, good vs bad, nurturing, finding/finding, death/destruction, traumatic repetitive play, sexualised play.
5) Enhanced ability to provide feedback about children’s progress in play therapy to parents/caregivers, other professionals, and in reports.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This workshop is essential for play therapists. It is also relevant for other mental health clinicians working with children who have some training and experience using play-based approaches – e.g. psychologists, counsellors, social workers, occupational therapists etc.
